Officials Accreditation Scheme

The Association provides an officials accreditation scheme in accordance with ALA guidelines. The program was recently reviewed and some procedures have been changed.

The Accreditation scheme has five levels of accreditation which are achieved through a mixture of theory exams and practical assessments. Officials Accreditation Verification Forms for all grades can be downloaded by clicking on the relevant links at the bottom of this page.

  • Junior D Grade

    14 or 15 (at time of doing exam)

    The Junior D Grade Official will be permitted to officiate at events for age groups younger than themselves.· Each candidate will be limited to three exams per season. · Junior D Grading will be administered by Zone Co-ordinators. They will maintain records of officials with this grading. At least once per season they are to provide the office with a listing of current Junior D Grade officials on an approved form.· The Junior D Grading ceases once the official turns 17. They may, however, apply through the Zone Co-ordinator to translate that accreditation to a D Grade. · There is no Junior D Grade accreditation for Starting (Minimum age for Starters is 18). Theory· Exam is in Multiple Choice form· Time limit 30 min per exam· Pass mark of 75%· All disciplines are covered except for starter and refereesContact Zone Co-ordinators to sit for the exam. Practical· Assessment normally takes 1 night/day and can be done at any Little Athletic Carnival, including Centre Competition· Supervised by an official appointed by their Zone Co-ordinator or the Officials Director

  • D Grade

    16 (Except for starter, who must be at least 18 years)

    These exams are aimed at those who wish to chief at Centre level and gain enough experience to assist at Zone/Region.Theory· Multiple choice question exam paper with a pass mark of 75%· Time limit 30 min per exam· All disciplines are covered at this level except Referees· These papers should be marked by the Zone Co-ordinator or appointee· All disciplines are covered, except RefereePractical· Assessment normally takes 1 night/day and can be done at any Little Athletic Carnival, including Centre Competition· Supervisor has to be a C or higher graded official· This assessment can be at any Little Athletics carnival (including Centre competition) providing Association Rules of Competition are followedThere is no limit to the number of “D” Grade Exams that may be attempted per season, however it should be noted that it would be difficult to do all practical exams in the one season as you can only sit for one practical on each day/night of competition.

  • C Grade

    16 (Except for starter, who must be at least 18 years)

    C Grade is aimed at officials who want to be a “Chief” at Zone/Region or wish to assist at Region/State carnivals Theory· Multiple choice question exam paper with a pass mark of 85% (i.e. 17 out of 19· Time limit of 1 hour per exam· These papers are marked by Zone Co-ordinators or appointee.· All disciplines are covered, except Refere Practical· Candidates must also pass a practical assessment of at least two (2) days/nights competition· Supervised by a higher graded official approved by the Zone Co-ordinator.· This assessment can be at any Little Athletics carnival (including Centre competition) providing Association Rules of Competition are followedThe participant may attempt only three (3) “C” Grade Exams per season.

  • B Grade

    Must have held C Grade for at least 2yrs before attempting B Grade

    B Grade is aimed at officials who wish to progress to being “Chiefs” at Region/State level. To attain B Grade accreditation, officials have to have held a C Grade accreditation for at least two years and have been actively officiating on that event for at least two years. Theory· Pass mark for this theory paper is 80%· These papers are a one-hour (1hr) written exam, undertaken in the company of an appointee of the Association· The papers are to be forwarded to the Officials Director, who will appoint two (2) independent markers· All disciplines are covered Practical· Candidates must also pass a practical assessment of at least two (2) days/nights competition at an appropriate carnival (normally Association carnival)· Supervised by an official appointed by the Officials DirectorThe participant may attempt only three (3) “B” Grade Exams per season.

  • A Grade

    A Grade accreditation is awarded via nominations. The applicant has to meet stringent criteria (see below). The nomination is considered by the Officials Director (with assistance from the Officials Advisory Sub Committee). If the nomination is accepted, a recommendation for approval is referred to the Board of Management for acceptance. A Grade Accreditation Nomination forms can be obtained from Zone Co-ordinators or by clicking here Criteriaa) Must be able to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and competency in applying the Association’s Rules of Competition, policies and procedures.b) Must be able to demonstrate the competencies to manage and officiate all facets of the relevant event.c) Must be able to demonstrate an ability to train, educate and mentor “new” officials.d) Must have held B Grade accreditation in that event for the last 5 consecutive seasons.e) Should have been an active official at two full eligible carnivals for 4 out of 5 consecutive seasons and at least one eligible carnival in the other season. The eligible carnivals are: State Relays, State Multi-Event, State Track & Field Championships, Trans Tasman Trials and, when hosted by LAANSW, Trans Tasman Challenge and ALAC.f) It is highly desirable that the nominee is an active official at secondary (Zone/Region) level or Centre level.

Officials Accreditation Verification Forms

As evidence of the completion of the above requirements for “B”, “C” and “D” Grade accreditation an Officials Accreditation Verification Form must be completed and forwarded by the Zone Co-ordinator or to the Officials Director via the Association Office. Once the forms have been checked and accepted by the Association Office appropriate accreditation cards will be arranged and forwarded to the Zone Co-ordinator for distribution.The Officials Accreditation Verification Form for Junior D Grades is kept by the Zone Co-ordinator, who will prepare the Accreditation Certificate for successful applicants.

The verification forms will contain:

  • details of the applicant
  • the results of the theory exams
  • affirmation of passing of the practical component (which includes the supervisors name and grading held in event being tested)
  • details of the activities tested e.g. long jump – spotting, raking, recording, measuring chiefing
  • a statement on the competency of the applicant

Applicants for B and C Grade would also be expected to demonstrate the ability to give a talk to competitors before an event briefly explaining the rules and procedures to be used at that event (one of the duties of a Chief Judge).
